PHYSICAL EDUCATION, ATHLETIC COACHING & HEALTH
Gator Skin Balls:  Gilbert Bagaman. - Come prepared to participate and to have fun playing with coated foam balls.                                                                          
Plyometrics:  Saturday, 8:15-10:45 and M/Tu/Th, 1:30-2:45 - This course will cover all the areas of speed and explosiveness training, useful for athletes of all levels.  This includes testing, evaluation, sports specific exercise selection and implementation.  This hands on clinic will provide an active workout for our students.                                                                                                                                                   
Tennis:  Saturday, 12:00-2:30/Sunday, 9:45-12:15 - This course is designed for players, Physical Education teachers and coaches. Please join us in combining stroke and game progressions that develop the fundamentals of tennis. Consistency, Depth, Accuracy and Power.

Pedometer Games:  Saturday, 4:15-5:30 - Come learn the many different individual, partner, and large group games and activities that you can use with a pedometer. These games and activities are great as rainy day activities, fitness training, and can be used as a unit in itself. The incredible thing is all the games are new and were created by my students. The games are active, fun, and challenging for students at all levels of development. Once you attend this session, you'll want to purchase a class set of pedometers to use with your students.

Surfing:  Saturday:  8:15-12:00, Saturday, 9:00-12:00 - The surfing course will include basic ocean awareness, wave recognition, as well as the skills required to learn how to surf. The course will include how to recognize riptides. It will cover what types of waves are appropriate for learning how to surf, as well as explaining how to get up and surf. The instructor will be in the water to assist anyone who needs help.

Hike the Hills:  Saturday, 8:15-12:15 - Come experience hiking for physical fitness.  Learn potential benefits of hiking, ways to incorporate hiking into your curriculum, and safety concerns.

Fun and Fitness – Ultimate Frisbee/Rugby:  Sunday, 1:30-4:00 - Participants will be actively involved as they learn a wide variety of Frisbee activities/games which can be utilized in their PE classes at every level. Each participant will be required to demonstrate proficiency catching and throwing a Frisbee in a variety of ways upon completion of the course.

Touch Rugby: Participants will learn the rules, skills, and strategies involved in order to teach this sport to their PE classes. Participants must be prepared to be physically active each session since they will practice/perform all the skills that they will teach to their own students eventually.

Variety of Tag Games:  Sunday, 1:30-4:00 -  Come learn and participate in various tag games that will engage all your students.

Pickleball:  Mon/Tues, 6:45-8:00 - Pickle ball is a paddle and whiffle ball game.  The game is played with badminton scoring on a badminton court with a three foot high net.It's an excellant game played in singles or doubles, young or old...drills and play.

Badminton:  Wed/Thurs/Fri, 6:45-8:00 - This is a practical teaching approach for the general physical education student in middle or high school.  We will start with the basics for a non racket sport student including the parts of the racket, grip and eye-hand coordination drills. We will then move into basic serving technique, types of hits and court strategy.  We will cover lines on the court, rules of the game, practice drills and game play.  We will also emphasis classroom management strategies when giving a student an implement along with an emphasis on good sportsmanship.

Sports Specific Training:  M-F:  6:45-8:00 – this course will cover all areas of sports specific training.  This includes strength, power, balance, core, flexibility, speed, agility, nutrition, and program design.  They will learn what exercises are used for which and how to properly implement them into a program.    

Golf:  M-F:  6:45-8:00 - The participants in this workshop will learn innovative ways to teach golf as a Physical Education Unit, as well as the necessary fundamental skills to enable them to teach the unit.

Boxing:  M-F, 6:45-8:00 - This course is designed to introduce the students to fundamental skills, strategy and tactics of striking skills which will help the person in their overall physical fitness program.
1. To develop an understanding of and an awareness for striking skills as physical fitness tool.
2. To provide experience in the basics of striking skills.
3. To be able to execute the basic skills of jabbing, punching, reacting, and escaping.
4. To develop one’s self-confidence and self-respect

Nutrition:  M-F, 8:15-9:30 - Monday:  Supplement Update for Coaches & Athletes
Differentiate between the hype and facts of supplement information in the media.
Discussion topics include common supplements and how they affect athletic performance.   
Tuesday:  Taking Care of Your Health:  Nutrition Strategies for High Cholesterol & Other Health Concerns
Taking care of our own health allows us to model positive lifestyle habits for our youth.
Be a leader and learn strategies for impacting your own health concerns through healthy nutrition.  Participants will learn how to eat to modify their risk for several chronic health conditions, or possibly reduce the need for medications for those individuals who have
been diagnosed.
Thursday: Nutrition for Optimal Performance
Help your athletes enhance their performance by eating to win.  Information on how inadequate nutrition habits increases the risk for injury in student athletes and strategies for improving dietary intake.  Will also review the nutritional needs of athletes to ensure proper growth and development, body composition, and overall health.
Friday:  Know Your Nutrition:  Intake Recommendations for Sugar and Other Nutrients
Update on the latest changes in RDI for various nutrients including the recently announced guidelines for sugar intake.  Overview of online resources that can be used for students to enhance learning and also as tools.

Yoga: Vinyasa Flow:  M-F, 8:15-9:30 - This course will follow a progressive week long practice, pulling from instructional knowledge of classical Iyengar, Ashtanga, and Vinyasa-flow, while celebrating many styles of Yoga.  YogaEd and Yogaworks Trained and Certified, the Instructor will include anatomy, philosophy, asana practice, instructional modifications and restoratives, that can be adapted to your physical education program. 

Football Coaching:  M-F, 8:15-9:30 - The course will include sections dealing with coaching philosophy (could be used with any sport), practice organization and schematics of football, to include technique, scheme and strategies. 
The development of your philosophy will be a look at yourself and the dynamics of where you are teaching and coaching…to establish a plan to get the most of your athletes understanding the climate at your school.
Practice organization will develop a plan to prepare your athletes in all areas of the game to be played that week.  It will include meeting time, walk through’s to practice organization of all aspects of the game of football.
Schematically we will spend time discussing offensive, defensive and special teams philosophies and schematics used here at Cal Poly.

Soccer:  M-F, 8:15-9:30 - Focus on individual offensive and defensive skills, game strategy, rules, and team tactics through the use of small-sided games and individual drills.  Demonstrations, practice, and feedback from the instructor will help participants improve their skills and knowledge of the game.

Volleyball:  M-F, 8:15-9:30 - This class will cover the 5 basic skills of volleyball: Passing, Serving, Setting, Spiking, and individual Defense providing a blueprint for teaching volleyball at the most basic to the most complex levels. Additionally, drills will be executed in an effort to create game-like repetitions for the beginning to advanced athlete.
Physiology of Exercise Training:  M/Tu, 9:45-11:00
This lecture will cover the latest understanding of the physiological mechanisms responsible for improved performance with exercise training. It will cover training for both endurance and speed/power.

Sport Psychology:  Wed-Fri, 9:45-11:00 - The purpose of these presentations will be to provide participants with some basic theoretical and conceptual topics that impact the sport experiences of coaches, athletes and parents.  The presenters will make a brief 45 - 50 minute presentation and then leave time for discussion at the end of each session.

Swimming for Physical Education:  M-F, 9:45-11:00 - This course is designed to help you incorporate aquatics into your physical education program.   You will learn a variety of activities that your class can do in a pool that the students will enjoy.  Some of the activities included are aquatic circuit training, strategies for non-swimmers, shallow water games and more.  Plan to get wet and have a blast.

DANCE 101 - THE BASICS:  M-F, 9:45-11:00 - A class designed for the Physical Educator who has limited or no knowledge in the concepts of teaching dance. The course will introduce unique teaching styles/techniques, dance step progressions & simple line, couple and group dances that are simple to learn and easy to implement into any physical education class Jeff Stanley & Will Ortlinghaus have been teaching junior high dance for at least the last 50 years [at least it feels that way!]. Their classes range from 150-180 non-motivated, apathetic and stoned faced students to highly energetic [ADHD] "Dancing with the Stars" wannabe's per class period, but some how they get them to move. Before the class is completed, all students are smiling and seem to be having a good time. How do they do it? They have no idea….come see what makes their classes "special".

Health Issues:  M-F, 9:45-11:00 Monday:  “Brain Gym” - Exciting new research on how physical activity sparks the brain, enhances academic achievement, and assists with common conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and addictions.  We'll discuss how this information can help you with grant writing and program justification, as well as practical strategies for implementation in your classroom.
Tuesday:  Adult Onset Diseases in Youth
More and more children are being diagnosed with diseases typically found in adults.
What is contributing to this phenomenon and how educators and coaches help curb this
trend?

Wednesday:  “Health issues: Tools to Destress”: Students (and teachers!) are more and more stressed out - this session provides practical activities you can use in your class or with you’re athletes to destress.  Many of the major universities now have 'mindfulness-based research centers' that demonstrate techniques to decrease stress and aid in treating diseases; we'll highlight some of the research.
Thursday:  “Health issues: Secrets to a Good Night's Sleep”
Adults and students are staying up later and rising earlier, resulting in less than 6 hours per night.  This session presents the latest research on the effects of poor sleep and strategies for getting those extra zzzzzzz's!
Friday:  “Health issues: Best Practice - Activities & Assignments”
This session provides us with an opportunity to share and discuss favorite health activities and assignments.  Bring one copy of your favorites and you'll have a chance to show/describe what

Basketball:  Wed/Thurs/Fri., 9:45-11:00  - Emphasis on Footwork Fundamentals.
Interaction between perimeter and post players using one quarter of a court.
The teaching applies to both genders and all levels of basketball play.

Tennis:  M/Tu, 1:30-2:45 - Intro to the Basics of Tennis:  Groundstrokes, Volleys & Serving

Obesity/Eating Disorders/Health:  M/Tu/Th, 1:30-2:45 - Monday:  Obesity in American Youth:  Strategies for overcoming the new health crisis. The growing trend toward obesity in youth may have a serious impact on the long term health of our nation.   Learn key strategies for having positive discussions with students about body weight and health, and help them take charge with tools for empowerment. Several social networking and online resources for support and education will be covered.
Tuesday:  Disordered Eating in Athletes
Body weight is often a concern for athletes, and employing drastic measures to achieve a certain weight can impact not only current athletic performance but also lifelong health.   Disordered eating can often be difficult for coaches to identify because of a multitude of factors.  Learn warning signs and implications of eating disorders for athletes and how you can help.
Thursday:  Anorexia, Bulimia, Obesity & Body Image

Favrit Instant Activities:  M/Tu/Th, 1:30-2:45 - FAvrit Instant Activities require NO EQUIPMENT to facilitate.  Each activity should take 1 minute or less to explain and is all inclusive. These activities may focus on social, cognitive, anaerobic and aerobic content of physical education.  FAvrit Instant Activities are intended for all grade levels and all abilities.

Quality Coaching Practices That Enhance Learning Outcomes:  M/Tu/Th:  3:00-4:15   –   I will provide practice plan ideas that will enhance the performance of your athlete.  I will discuss the meaningful ways to communicate with your athlete so they can perform.  This positive approach to effective communication will have your athlete learning quickly.  The use of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards will help at every level.

Over the Line Kickball: Saturday, 1:00-3:30 -  Basic warm up and lead up drills for kickball will be conducted in preparation to playing an Over the Line Kickball game. The same basic rules from the official Over the Line game will be used, with a few adaptations.
